Timberlake Family

January 12, 2021

Jenny Timberlake has been a teacher for 18 years. She has taught pre-school inclusion students, followed by kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade and currently teaches life skills in a self-contained classroom at Lamar High School.

She believes her earlier teaching experience with pre-school and elementary school children has helped her so much with teaching special education. Last year, she even launched a best buddies program to pair her students without disabilities to her students with disabilities. She strives to help children learn daily living skills and prepares them for when they eventually leave the high school.

From March until June, Jenny had been teaching these children virtually, even though many of her students do not know how to use a computer. During this time, her parents were able to help her take care of her own children who are ages 13, 10 and 8.

Jenny describes her biggest challenge in 2020 was not being able to hug her students and connect with them. Many of her students have sensory issues and like to hug, high-five and work side-by-side. However, due to Covid-19, she has had to find new ways to connect with her students. Although, the pandemic brought forth many obstacles for Jenny, it gave her time to find the perfect house and with the help of Envoy, Jenny was able to have Christmas lights on her home for her kids for the very first time!
